The Day We Went to Away, written by Stuart French and illustrated by Madison Pollard
“Oh, when can we go to this place called Away, I’ve lent it many things but not learned where they stay?”. If you, like me, are plied with questions daily, this book may help. Most of us are at least aware of the very real problems associated with excessive single use plastic consumption but discussing these matters with our children is often tricky. ‘The Day We Went to Away’ leads the reader through an engaging who-dunnit style mystery, or rather, where is it? And the answer is, honestly rather dire.
This book pulls no punches, and I know my six-year-old really appreciated the call to action style of the book, which placed her firmly at the helm of protecting the planet she loves so dearly.
Hugo – The Boy with the Curious Mark, written by Yohann Devezy and illustrated Manuela Adreani
Warning: this book may make you cry. Hugo is a boy who was born with a curious rainbow mark. Hugo’s family are not concerned, but Hugo wants to fit in. Thus, begins a tale of beauty, acceptance, and celebration of difference. I do not exaggerate when I say this book is STUNNING. The illustrations are darkly whimsical and as captivating to adults as they are to children. Hugo will steal your heart and run through the carnival with it.
The Eagle Inside, written by Jack Manning Bancroft and illustrated by Bronwyn Bancroft
Jimmy is the smallest bird at school. Surrounded by big, tough birds, he feels different in every way and is certain he will never fit in. But when Eagle reminds him that being small isn’t necessarily a weakness, Jimmy discovers how being different can also be a strength.
Resilience is a continual theme in our household, and raising strong, gentle children who will become strong, gentle adults is a challenge.
‘The Eagle Inside’ is a story about the power of our minds, and how even the smallest person can contain a brave spirit that far exceeds its physical countenance. Beautifully illustrated, we find ourselves returning to ‘The Eagle Inside’ whenever a little extra bravery is called upon.
